چکیده

[1] Flexural modeling of Ithaca Chasma on Tethys suggests that the elastic thickness and the surface heat flux were 5–7 km and 18–30 mW/m respectively, when the feature formed ( 4 Gyr B.P.). Tidal heating is a plausible heat source, suggesting that Tethys’ eccentricity was higher in the past. Depending on Tethys’ internal structure, eccentricities in the range 0.001 to 0.02 are sufficient to have generated the inferred heat flux. Because the eccentricity damping timescale is short, < 20 Myr, it is unlikely that this eccentricity was primordial. More likely, Tethys’ eccentricity increased during passage through a 3:2 resonance with Dione. In equilibrium, this resonance produces 2.5 mW/m suggesting that non-equilibrium or periodic heating was important, similar to the case for Enceladus at present. Citation: Chen, E. M. A., and F. Late-stage impacts and the orbital and thermal evolution of Tethys

An inferred ancient episode of heating and deformation on Tethys has been attributed to its passage through a 3:2 resonance with Dione (Chen, E.M.A., Nimmo, F. [2008]. Geophys. Res. Lett. 35, 19203). The satellites encounter, and are trapped into, the e-Dione resonance before reaching the e-Tethys resonance, limiting the degree to which Tethys is tidally heated. However, for an initial Dione ec...

Planktonic Foraminifera of the Dariyan formation and implications of Oceanic Anoxic Event 1a

The investigated section cropping out in Kuh-e-Banesh, Zagros basin (southern Iran) is represented by limestone, Cherty beds and marllevels bearing abundant Planktonic foraminifers, radiolarian microfaunas, and ammonite imprints. For the first time, well to moderatelypreserved forms of Planktonic foraminifera have been extracted from black shale and marls levels. Extracted biota was studied wit...

Hydrothermal waters from karst aquifer: Case study of the Trozza basin (Central Tunisia)

Tunisia is rich in geothermal resources from ancient civilizations. Hydrothermal activity in Tunisia has been related to three main stages: magmatic and tectonic activities, eustatisme (Atlantic and Mediterranean coupling) and climate change. The principal factor and the responsable of this phenomenon is the meteoric water by piston flow processes. It constitue the catalyst of volcanism. The Tr...

Erosion, burial, and exhumation at Ganges Mensa, Mars

Ross A. Beyer, NASA Ames Research Center, MS 245-3, Moffett Field, CA, USA ([email protected]) Ganges Mensa is a large mesa-like structure located near 311 E, 7.5 S on Mars within the Ganges Chasma. The slopes and surfaces of Ganges Mensa display a variety of morphologies, indicating that units of variable lithology constitute the stratigraphic stack of the mensa as observed by many previous ...
